Ιndicative bibliography

Myrcia sphaerocarpa, a medicinal shrub from Brazil traditionally used to treat diabetes, diarrhea, dysentery, and hypertension (Ulbricht, 2011). The main reported biological properties of β-myrcene—anxiolytic, antioxidant, anti-ageing, anti-inflammatory, analgesic properties—are discussed, with the mechanisms of activity. Here we also discuss recent data regarding the safety of β-myrcene. Overall, β-myrcene has shown promising health benefits in many animal studies. However, studies conducted in humans is lacking. In the future, there is potential for the formulation and production of non-alcoholic beers, functional foods and drinks, and cannabis extracts (low in THC) rich in β-myrcene.

B-myrcene is a natural compound with a stellar safety profile which could significantly improve immune functions, as well as decrease pain sensation in patients suffering from inflammatory as well as chronic pain. Given the known anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive effects of cannabis, it is important to discern the qualities that can provide the correct terpene synergy to manage different disorders such as ostheoarthritis, neuropathic pain or dermatitis. (2,21,22) Some cannabis strain more than others contain high levels of myrcene, usually those with more “sedative” effects, which, by the recreational world, have been called “indica plants”. Although the mechanism of function of myrcene is not fully understood yet, it is evident its promising role in the treatment of inflammation and pain. Better understanding of myrcene interactions within the cannabis plant and its clinical effect in humans may contribute to the developing of specific cannabis genetics to target at best inflammatory disorders.

Antimicrobial, apoptotic, antimetastatic, and antibiotic properties (Cote, n.d.). α-pinene is one promising agent for the treatment of various inflammatory diseases as it has been found to suppress MAPKs and the NF-κB pathway (Kim et al., 2015). The inflammation associated with acute pancreatitis is considerably reduced by treatment with α-pinene in vivo via the downregulation of TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 (De Cássia Da Silveira E Sá et al., 2013). reduced histological damage and myeloperoxidase activity in the pancreas and lungs of cerulein-induced AP in laboratory rats (Bae et al., 2012). Mechanistic studies have also shown neutralized production of pancreatic (TNF)-α, IL-1β, and IL-6, thereby negating the inflamogen induced inflammatory changes (Bae et al., 2012).

α- and β-pinene are well-known representatives of the monoterpenes group, and are found in many plants’ essential oils. A wide range of pharmacological activities have been reported, including antibiotic resistance modulation, anticoagulant, antitumor, antimicrobial, antimalarial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-Leishmania, and analgesic effects. This article aims to summarize the most prominent effects of α- and β-pinene, namely their cytogenetic, gastroprotective, anxiolytic, cytoprotective, anticonvulsant, and neuroprotective effects, as well as their effects against H2O2-stimulated oxidative stress, pancreatitis, stress-stimulated hyperthermia, and pulpal pain.
